ABSTRACT

The functional (hormone producing) cells of the anterior pituitary may undergo selective overgrowth. These cases usually present to the gynaecologist with menstrual abnormalities or infertility, in which the hyperplasia affects the prolactin producing cells. The tumours are often referred to as a ‘prolactinomas’. They are small, tend to be situated in the lateral part of the gland and are often multiple. Very small tumours are called ‘microadenomas’.
