ABSTRACT

In an evolutionary sense, the primary function of every plant and animal species is reproduction and to this general rule humans are no exception. We are, however, very unusual in indulging in sex for pleasure as well as for procreation. This is a behaviour trait shared by very few other species, of which the most notable is the bonobo (pigmy chimpanzee) of Central Africa. Unfortunately, for a small but significant number of individuals, sexual activity may be anything but pleasurable.
