ABSTRACT

By this question, of course, I mean behaviour, personality traits, intelligence and so on, and not family heirlooms. In other words, what part of the way we are, and the way we behave, is determined by the genes passed on to us by our parents? At a glance, this may seem like a simple question to answer: all we have to do is watch newborn babies, who have had no opportunity to learn anything, and whatever they can do is obviously determined genetically, and therefore likely to be inherited from the mother, father or both. From the observation of the newborn we could compile a long list of behaviours: crying, swallowing, blinking, defecating, sucking, yawning, sneezing, coughing, grasping, etc.
