ABSTRACT

Whether you are interested in or committed to equal opportunities or not, a postgraduate research degree necessarily calls for justifiable and defensible scholarship. You are required to demonstrate knowledge of the subject area and provide a critical evaluation of the research of others, available literature and relevant data. This cannot be done without an awareness of the way that an equal opportunities approach impinges upon all research activities. Ideally this approach should inform all writing about research. Since it has not, it is necessary to be explicit in this chapter, by crystallizing the issue and providing broad guidelines to adopt in conjunction with the advice and practical wisdom in other chapters.
