ABSTRACT

The aim of this chapter is to amplify some of the general discussion from Chapter 14 in the specific context of quantitative research, to introduce some key terms of quantitative research with references for further reading and to provide links to the following chapters on Survey Methods, Secondary Analysis and Statistical Analysis. Two broad types of quantitative research may be distinguished: primary research in which you both collect and analyze data, and secondary analysis in which you analyze data from secondary sources, such as government surveys (discussed in Chapter 20). This chapter focuses on primary research, although much of the discussion will also be relevant to secondary analysis.
