ABSTRACT

In Chapter 6, I described the development of a cognitive rehabilitation approach for people with early-stage Alzheimer's disease. In this approach, theoretical perspectives and practical techniques from neuropsychology, cognitive psychology, behavioural psychology and psychotherapy are combined within a rehabilitation framework that takes account of the personal context and surrounding social system. Within this approach intervention is aimed at disability and handicap rather than at impairment, and this determines the focus of assessment (as discussed in Chapter 7), intervention and outcome evaluation.
