ABSTRACT
It has already been emphasized that arithmetical knowledge is often divided into three broad categories: factual, procedural and conceptual knowledge. Some chapters in this book emphasize aspects of conceptual knowledge. This chapter will place greater emphasis on factual and procedural knowledge and on certain influences on these. We have already considered how these may be associated with certain aspects of brain function and how they may be influenced by aspects of language and culture. This chapter will emphasize one important influence on factual and procedural knowledge: memory, and some related cognitive functions. Rather, one could say that it will emphasize several important influences on factual and procedural knowledge, since, like many cognitive functions, memory has several components and these influence factual and procedural knowledge in different ways and to different degrees.
