ABSTRACT

The study of individual differences in children’s visuo-spatial working memory (VSWM) can be considered under two main headings, which we will look at in this chapter. The first concerns age effects, including the possibility that at least some components of VSWM develop with age, and the factors underlying this development. The other heading regards the possibility that great differences in VSWM ability can be found within the same age group. This second heading can only be considered separately from a broader perspective concerning VSWM limitations within populations of all ages, both with and without specific profiles (as in particular syndromes such as Turner syndrome, see Chapter 7). In fact, some groups with specific VSWM limitations can be specifically found in developmental populations. The second part of this chapter will consider children with high verbal and low visuo-spatial intelligence who typically present a nonverbal learning disability.
