ABSTRACT
It appears that progress in understanding chunking emerged sooner in nonverbal domains than in the verbal domain in which Miller (1956) worked. Accordingly, nonverbal and verbal literature will be examined in turn. After evidence is presented and some theoretical issues are explored, a recent study by Cowan, Chen, and Rouder (2004) will be used to examine the hypothesis that there is a fixed capacity limit in terms of chunks recalled.
