ABSTRACT

Athletes who are high in hypnotic ability/absorption, high in neuroticism, and low in repressive coping are thought to be most vulnerable to negative psychological influences during critical moments of competition. However, if they are capable of accessing their inherent ability to intensely focus on the task at hand, these athletes can reach “zone” or “flow” states more easily than athletes who are low in hypnotic ability/absorption. They can be helped using active-alert hypnosis, an intervention designed to enhance taskspecific focus and motor performance.
