ABSTRACT

One problem with the world, and with the task of self-evaluation, is that so much of it is uncertain and ambiguous. We rarely deal with concrete and exact data, but must infer the exact meaning from information that is more vague and indistinct in meaning. Someone tells us we are “pretty good” at public speaking, and we must deconstruct what that person means by “pretty.” Does pretty good mean we are more than adequate in all phases of public speaking? Does it mean we should not consider ourselves all that “good” because “pretty” means we have some areas where we need to improve? What exactly does the “pretty” in “pretty good” mean?
