ABSTRACT
It seems highly probable that within most urban societies groups of men have developed specific sexual identities on the basis of their shared, local relations to homosexual desire, and also in relation to sexual roles. The factors determining the form of such sexual identities vary greatly over time from varieties of nationalist hostility to homosexuality, rationalized as a foreign perversion, to the cultural control and policing of gender relations.
