ABSTRACT

There has been controversy recently surrounding the issue of using animal by-products and extracts in animal feed, mainly due to the crisis in the 1990s over the mad cow disease, also known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). The status of feed formulated with animal ingredients needs to be considered from the halal perspective, that is, whether such feed nullifies the halal status of animals fed such feed. This chapter aims to clarify this issue and provide information to the industry.
