In the introduction to Part IV (Figure Part IV-I) the various facets of comprehension were outlined. One of these was identified as the ability to comprehend on different levels. Chapter 12 will focus on this aspect. To this point the discussion has focused on lexical access and semantic encoding (comprehending individual words) and on assembly and integration of propositions and text modeling (comprehending phrases, sentences, paragraphs, and the larger text). These are quantitative categories. Consider now a qualitative category.
