ABSTRACT
The second data set, reported by Peixoto (1990) is given in Table 4.2, and shows the normal average January minimum temperature (in °F) along with the longitude and latitude for 56 cities in the U.S. (Average minimum temperature for January is found by adding together the daily minimum
temperatures and dividing by 31; then the January average minima for the years 1931 to 1960 are averaged over the 30 years.) Interest lies in developing an equation relating temperature to position as given by the latitude and longitude.
