ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents an overview of key concepts covered on the preceding chapters of this book. Following the exchange of ideas reflected through, conference participants turned to a discussion of next steps. This set of mathematicians, cognitive scientists, and mathematics educators shared a common commitment to mathematics education, an understanding of the magnitude of the tasks we face, and an understanding that each of the communities present had valuable things to contribute individually, of course, but much more effectively in synergy with the others. The discussions took place in three phases. The first phase consisted of reviewing issues raised prior to and during the conference, and brainstorming others for completeness. Following an evening of such conversations, members of the group noted that items on the list seemed to cluster naturally, and that those clusters might determine foci of interest. Participants broke into three groups to address the 'big issues' in those clusters.
