How to Say Those Four Tough Little Words to the Parent You Love

My dad’s car. Not only was it his ticket to ride, it was his vehicle to personal freedom. He could go wherever he wanted to go. To most males born in the Depression era, their cars represented their legs. My wheels, as they called them. Many of these men started driving before the legal age of 16. Women born during that time were not exempt from this newfound method of independence. One of our interviewees received her driver’s license by mail at age 13, and never took a driving test until she was 80 years old.
