ABSTRACT

How frightening is it to drive through a dense fog on an unknown dark and winding road, having no clear picture of what dangers lie around the bend? That is Alzheimer’s disease.

Navigating the Clouded World of Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia with Grace and Happiness

Since being diagnosed with early stage Alzheimer’s disease, Jenny Knauss has experienced her own artistic “renaissance.” Her passion for art, combined with deliberate mental concentration, has fueled her talent for pencil sketching. She frequently sketches flowers and sculpture at the Art Institute of Chicago. When patrons of the art museum stop to admire her work in progress and ask her how she is able to produce such marvelous sketches, she is tempted to reply, “First, you have to have Alzheimer’s.”
