ABSTRACT

We begin our discussion with a definition of aspect and some illustrations of its relation to other semantic phenomena. Thereafter, we develop an inventory of major aspectual types and their semantic and grammatical properties. We focus on six aspects: perfective/imperfective, telic/atelic, punctual!durative, iterative/semelfactive, progressive, and habitual, with short discussion of five minor types (intensive, incipient, terminative, prospective, and retrospective). We close the chapter with some theoretical discussion of typology and the conceptual underpinnings of aspect.
