ABSTRACT

Improvements in cognitive functioning are valued by people with schizophrenia. However, throughout this book we have emphasised that CRT should also facilitate the transfer of improved cognitive skills to other areas of behaviour and there is evidence that it does for those receiving therapy. This suggests some therapeutic optimism and hints that particular attributes of therapy specifically aid transfer from the cognitive to the functioning domain, since cognitive improvements brought about by non-specific effects (such as non-cognitive treatments or natural recovery) are not as helpful in facilitating functioning change. But these specific attributes have not yet been identified.
