ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines ways to introduce negative self belief work in bulimia nervosa and how to help patients create an alternative to their negative self beliefs. It introduces Padesky's prejudice model (Padesky 1990) as a useful metaphor for understanding how negative self beliefs are maintained and suggests ways to build or construct a new, alternative belief. A number of general strategies as well as some speci®c to BN for challenging old negative self beliefs and/or building up new beliefs are discussed, including strategies that draw on schema theory. These include use of the core belief worksheet, cognitive continua, historical tests of belief, a positive data log, behavioural experiments and ¯ashcards. The use of imagery modi®cation is also described.
