ABSTRACT

This chapter reports the analysis of some second-language acquisition (SLA) data on the binding of reflexives (anaphors) in interlanguages. This study builds in two ways on a growing body of literature in this area (e.g., Broselow & Finer, 1991; Cook, 1990; Finer, 1991; Finer & Broselow, 1986; Hirakawa, 1990; Thomas, 1989, 1991). First, the present study considers the question of the binding of reflexives with respect to two parameters of Universal Grammar (UG): the Governing Category Parameter (GCP) and the Proper Antecedent Parameter (PAP); and second, it considers this question from the viewpoint of two target languages: English and Japanese.
