ABSTRACT
I suspect that in most institutes, there is a common observation of beginning analytic candidates with their first cases.A young physician or other professional, with considerable psychotherapeutic experience, generally sensitive to his patients’ affective state, reasonably alert to the interaction between himself and his patient, although often ineffectual in attempting to alter that interaction, now has reached a landmark in his training. He is about to place the patient on the couch.
