ABSTRACT

If the clinician is in the position of offering a CBT intervention to the patient, then it is hoped that he or she will have gone through the following stages (described earlier in the book) that are required before proceeding to use CBT interventions. These are:

1 a detailed assessment and formulation of the presenting problem(s) at a maintenance level

2 careful consideration that the problems described by the patient are potentially amenable to change using CBT interventions, and that this is an acceptable treatment to the patient and that he or she consents to it

3 ensuring the delivery of CBT interventions is within the range of competencies of the treating clinician and that he or she has access to regular (weekly to monthly dependent on experience) CBT-focused clinical supervision delivered by a colleague with recognized specialist training in CBT.
