ABSTRACT

As described throughout this book, CBT has a strong evidence base supporting its use in the treatment and management of a range of mental health problems. The cognitive behavioural model has a strong research tradition and enshrined within its foundations is the idea that the treatments we use with patients should be tested and validated as part of an ongoing process of investigation (Salkovskis, 2002). In the current mental healthcare climate, which places increasing emphasis on using interventions that are evidence based, CBT has been endorsed as a treatment modality that patients should be able to readily access and that healthcare clinicians should be trained to deliver.
