ABSTRACT

In this chapter we explore an integrated approach to computer-assisted language learning (CALL) that addresses both general language competence and specialized discourse processing expertise in the development of communicative competence in a second language. General language competence refers to general language knowledge and processing skills that are needed to comprehend and produce well-formed sentences and coherent multisentence texts or discourse in a second language. Specialized discourse processing expertise refers to proficiency in using particular types of texts and discourse effectively in the second language within specific practical contexts.
