ABSTRACT
Herr Kommissar® ("Mr. Inspector") is a German-language intelligent computer-assisted language learning (ICALL) environment masquerading as a role-playing detective game. On entering Herr Kommissar's microworld, intermediate German students assume the identity of a visiting police inspector, or Kommissar, asked to solve a murder mystery by interrogating five (simulated) German-speaking suspects (Figure 9.1).
