ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates the application of the standard CBT approach to the assessment, formulation and treatment of depression in health professionals. It includes perfectionism as one important contributing cause. The case history focuses on a nurse manager called ‘Patrick Grey’, who was experiencing low mood due to difficulties in his job within the British National Health Service. Patrick was a 38-year-old nursing services manager who had been feeling depressed over the past year. He had not been absent from work, but contacted occupational health services because he did not feel he could cope with the pressures of his job for much longer. He was then referred to psychology services for assessment and help in the form of cognitive behaviour therapy.
