In France, kindergarten does not provide a systematic approach to teaching the relationship between reading and writing, although children have an initiation into writing during the last year of preschool. 1 How do children enter into the first steps of writing, and, in particular, how do they understand the characteristics of the writing system? What conceptualizations do these children form of written text?
