ABSTRACT

In keeping with the theme of this volume, the goal of the Year of Discovery collaboration was to involve researchers, teachers, and students in developing high-level thinking skills useful for learning and communication across the curriculum. Furthermore, our goal was for students’ increased independence in thinking and learning to improve their participation in their families and communities as well. Because the latter contexts make few distinctions between subject areas and encourage involvement of diverse individuals, we focus on integrated learning in a context of inclusion. The apprenticeship model described and demonstrated in the Year of Discovery program is an age-old approach whose possibilities are only beginning to be explored in public education.
