ABSTRACT

Even when assessing and preparing people for group therapy, some individual sessions are essential and I now turn to exploring the theory and practice of individual dramatherapy with people who have psychotic experiences and who hear voices. Individual therapy is particularly indicated for those who are too anxious for a group, are anti-social or have particular, profound difficulties that might be impossible to address in a group. However individual therapy may reinforce isolation and needs to be balanced by a programme of care that offers social activities. A period of individual therapy before a group enables people to make better use of the group when they do eventually join. The relationship with the therapist achieved in pre-group individual work helps to sustain people through the first weeks of the group when they were settling into new relationships.
