ABSTRACT
A huge suicide research literature has developed over the past one hundred years, drawing on psychology, philosophy, medicine, sociology and literature (Alvarez 1970; Masaryk 1970; Morgan 1993). Despite our increased awareness of the factors that appear to influence suicide, deciding whether or not people intend to kill themselves remains extremely difficult. Knowing why they might wish to commit suicide is often beyond our comprehension.
