ABSTRACT
Were he alive today, doubtless John Donne would acknowledge that both women and men need other people, and that the virtue of independence, which we have trumpeted so much in health and social care, is an illusion. We are social animals. Even when we feel the need to retire from the social world, thoughts of friends, family and relationships, invariably preoccupy us. The true hermit is a rare animal indeed.
