ABSTRACT

The Tidal Model flows from a variety of sources, not least our own experience of ourselves, both as persons and as professional people. However, the Tidal Model would likely not have developed had we not been interested in the nature of caring in a professional and wider social context. Our experiences as psychiatric nurse (PB) and social worker (PBB) had helped us appreciate that people in distress need to feel cared about, and cared for. Our related experiences as psychotherapists and counsellors helped us appreciate how this caring relationship could be a conjoint, reciprocal effort, and so we came to emphasise the notion of caring with.
