ABSTRACT

In this chapter I briefly review the three major current models of PTSD. This book examines PTSD from an evolutionary perspective and so will draw heavily on animal research; where possible, primate research will be given priority over that involving other animals. Primates are close relations of Homo sapiens, therefore, their behaviours are more directly relevant than those of rats, dogs and other convenient laboratory subjects (Mineka 1987). Study of non-human primates has already yielded valuable insights into attachment disorders and depression in humans (e.g. Suomi 1991).
