ABSTRACT

Ending is a process and needs to be given time within the trajectory of the therapy. The decision to end parent-infant psychotherapy activates a final stage in the relationship between the therapist and the parent/s and baby. Raw feelings are often readily activated, anxieties about separation and separateness are close to the surface. It is necessary to be especially mindful of such affects, and possible concomitant risk factors. Whenever possible, it is recommended that a sufficient number of sessions are allocated in which to recapitulate experiences and developments over time in the therapy, and express feelings activated by ending.
