ABSTRACT

Research on explicit instruction in second languages has tended to focus on two questions: (1) whether grammar should be taught and (2) what should be taught. These questions ignore an important aspect of explicit instruction, namely the type of grammar instruction used and the types of processes that the instruction seeks to affect. This chapter is part of a series on an ongoing investigation of the relative benefits of different kinds of instruction.
