ABSTRACT

The Calgary Early Psychosis Program (EPP) in western Canada is a wellestablished comprehensive programme for individuals experiencing a first episode of psychosis, offering treatment to patients and their families for three years (Addington and Addington 2001). EPP serves a population of 930,000 through a publicly funded healthcare system and receives approximately 100 referrals per annum. The EPP is situated in the department of psychiatry in one of the acute care facilities in the city. The programme, which began in December 1996, was specifically designed to meet the needs of those young people diagnosed with a first episode of psychosis.
