ABSTRACT
It appears paradoxical to create a wound to heal one, yet this is the drive so clearly found in self-harm, in which various, apparently con¯icting, roles get played out on the surface of the body. This apparent paradox reveals the ®ght between life and death instincts found in the act of self-harming; here violence against the self is used to preserve life.
