ABSTRACT

This chapter originated from a qualitative research project that sought to understand the personal journeys of women in secure settings who had chosen to no longer self-harm. The subtle yet important distinction between being engaged in self-harming and achieving and maintaining cessation was based on individuals' personal perceptions of their behaviours, allowing a service-userled de®nition of change to be used. The aim of the research was to provide insight into what supported, facilitated and maintained this process.
