ABSTRACT

In times of loss, spiritual beliefs can provide solace but also can be a source of confusion when life events contradict these beliefs. The relationship between spirituality and grief is complicated and often is approached with trepidation by counselors. Although a majority of people in the United States profess some form of religious belief (Kelly, 1995), counselors have been reluctant to explore spiritual issues in counseling. Yet spiritual issues are intricately woven into the loss experience.
