ABSTRACT

S OHO, simply SOHO, is the name of a commercial novelpublished in 1981 by Doubleday, a publisher with an acquired confidence about establishing best-sellers based upon a century of experience. The book’s author is C. L. Byrd, who is identified not within the book itself but only on the dust-jacket flap as “the pseudonym of two writers closely involved with the New York art world.” Two years later a paperback edition appeared from Bantam. I didn’t notice either of those books when they first appeared. Nor does anyone I know remember the title, as SoHo was published not for us SoHoites but for the American masses. A postal card that was sent recently to “C. L. Byrd” at Doubleday, asking him/her for real identities, did not get a reply.
