ABSTRACT

S ince no initial list of recognizable American artistsresiding in and near SoHo for some consequential time can be definitive, I resisted making one. One fear was the sorts of errors, beginning with misspellings, that might creep in to such a list. On the other hand, nothing less than a large inventory can convey so persuasively my sense of it as a hothouse. Many of these professionals are already acknowledged in the critical histories of their arts; others no doubt will be, not just because they lived in SoHo. In the following alphabetical order, I used genre tags not to define an individual’s work but to give their names a professional context. My swimming-pool buddy Sean Sweeney, incidentally a SoHo community activist, contributed several names.
