ABSTRACT
In Victor Hugo's book, Les Miserables, Inspector Javert is obsessed with justice. For Javert, mercy does not exist. Every crime, no matter how tiny, deserves punishment. Violations of justice are personal affronts to Javert. Mercy by others enrages him and sets his bloodhound nose to the ground to root out kindness.
