ABSTRACT

We were married at 19 in 1968 while we were in undergraduate school. Eventually, after picking several other major areas of study, as most young college students do, we both settled into the study of psychology. Thus began our long-standing and rewarding collaboration. When we were 22, our son was born; he is now completing his doctorate in counseling psychology. Ultimately, we both completed our doctoral degrees in psychology and went on to work in marital and sex therapy. We have worked together closely for over 27 years, logging many hours with couples in distress about their sexual or marital relationships, or both. Over these years, we have come to appreciate the intricate workings of a long-standing sexual relationship such as marriage and how sexual symptoms provide us with information about how to intervene.
