ABSTRACT

In this chapter I summarise the main arguments put forward and discussed on embodiment and narrative. One of the consequences of conducting the research for this book has been a realisation that the type of language we use to interpret our clients’ narrative is sometimes inadequate. This will be discussed in a section entitled ‘Professional and personal discourse’. The result of raising these issues has been the growing realisation that we need to take a good hard look at therapeutic discourse, so within this chapter there is also a section entitled ‘Towards a critical psychotherapy’ which addresses this particular issue.
