ABSTRACT

I had no notion of where this was going . . . so a good deal of the early progress was what the mathematicians call a drunkard’s walk. It was good because we did move . . . Once in a while we saw a gleam of light [and] as we got enough gleams of light, the theory began to be put together . . . This is the way it evolved, and this is the way any important theory evolves.
