Dated, but philosophy presented is still embraced by more recent authors. Purpose: “ . . . to set forth the essential function of church music and to present certain means of attaining it.” Organized into two parts: (1) nine chapters address principles of church music, and (2) five chapters address application of the principles within music for the congregation, choir, and organ, and offers suggestions for the music director and organist.
