ABSTRACT

The developmental approach to the human psyche, which has been the main theme and focus of this book so far, can also help us to investigate the analytic process itself. Just as representation, symbolism and meaning are emergent features of the astonishingly complex interaction of the genome, the brain and the interpersonal world of the human infant, so intrapsychic change during analytic therapy, with the creation of new symbols and meanings, can also be seen to emerge out of the complex interactions between the conscious and unconscious of both analyst and analysand.
