ABSTRACT
Junior toddlerhood was epitomized by the discovery of a rudimentary trust in movement of the whole body and the consequent internal conflict between the urge to explore and the wish to remain close to the loved parents. Vitality, full-blooded feeling and fantasy are the hallmarks of the toddler period. In discussing this time of life it would be wrong to separate out each year too strictly from the others. Many things that apply to a 2-yearold can also be said of a 4-year-old, and vice versa. Developments are taking place at a rapid speed; one child will develop in one direction but not in another until later, whereas with another child it will be the other way around. Indeed, some of the issues considered in this chapter, e.g. toilet training and taking control of the body, might equally have been considered as part of the last chapter.
